Usobiaga, who just like the last year’s winner, Josune Bereziartu, comes from the Basque country, was the winner of the Salewa Rock Award. The climber was the only one to come to Arco with two nominations, for both Rock and Competition Award. Finally the Jury awarded him for his “capacity in climbing an impressive number of top-end routes, excelling both in on-sight ascents and redpoints”. The public welcomed the decision with applause as Patxi is without a doubt a passionate climber who has on his account enormous amount of difficult and intense ascents.

Together with Patxi Usobiaga the nominees to the La Sportiva Competition Award were two Austrians: last year’s winner Angela Eiter and teenage phenomenon David Lama. Here the task for the Jury was not easy either. The Jury had to choose between three climbers with amazing competition performances – two winners of the last year’s World Cup and one almost-winner, who excelled both in difficulty and bouldering. In the end the decision was to award David Lama who was called “the most impressive competition climber of 2006/2007 season”. He was awarded for his class and talent that at the age of 17 let him get to the top of the list of the world’s climbing competitors.
