New Speed Record on Eiger North Face by Ueli Steck – 3:41

1978 Tsuneo Hasegawa (Japan), first winter solo ascent, Ivan Ghirardini (France) – second winter ascent (6 days) Japanese climber made the first winter solo ascent of the Schmid Route on Matterhorn during 13-16 March 1977 (descent took next two days). Next year he was the first to solo 1938 Route on Eiger North Face. The same year the feat was repeated by the 25-year-old French soloist, Ivan Ghirardini, who made it during 6 days (storm and 100ft fall in the Exit Cracks were the major incidents of the epic).
1981 Ueli Bühler (Switzerland) solos the face in 8 hours 30 minutes
1983 Thomas Bubendorfer (Austria) makes astonishing 4 hours 50 minutes solo ascent almost having Bühler's time (17 July)

2003 Christoph Heinz beats 20-year record, soloing the face in 4 hours 30 minutes (23 March)
2007 Ueli Steck sets up a new solo speed record on Eiger North face with 3 hours 41 minutes
